Meet Your Climbing Coaches

Your Alpine Climbing Clinic will be led by top knotch guides Ange Malysheva and Lewis Foster. Ange, founder of RAWQ, is a passionate advocate for inclusivity in climbing, with extensive experience in alpine granite and empowering climbers with essential skills. Lewis, Director of K7 Adventures and a Snowy Mountains local, brings a wealth of knowledge in climbing paired with an intimate understanding of the region’s granite terrain. Together, they’ll provide the expertise, support, and inspiration to help you expand your skills and confidence in alpine climbing.

Retreat Itinerary

Join us for five days of alpine climbing in the stunning Snowy Mountains, where you’ll gain practical skills and hands-on experience in a unique environment. Guided by expert instructors Ange Malysheva and Lewis Foster, this clinic focuses on building trad climbing techniques, anchor systems, multi-pitch skills, and resilience for real-world alpine challenges.

With two nights in cosy lodge accommodation and two nights camping under the stars at Blue Lake, you’ll balance adventure with moments of reflection and camaraderie. This is more than a skills clinic—it’s an opportunity to push your limits, connect with nature, and prepare for future alpine adventures.

Day 1:  Settle In, Connect, and Relax

Arrive at our private lodge in Thredbo Village by early afternoon

Settle into your preallocated room—your home away from home for the next two nights.

Quick gear check and preparation session to ensure everyone is ready for the days ahead.

Enjoy a hearty home-cooked meal and stay overnight at Thredbo Schuss Lodge, getting to know your fellow climbers and guides.

Day 2:   Fundamentals and Trad Skills

Spend the full day at the top of Thredbo, focusing on climbing fundamentals and granite techniques.

Learn traditional climbing skills, including crack climbing and gear placement, in a supportive environment.

Return to the lodge for a relaxing evening and a good night's rest.

Day 3: Establish basecamp at Blue Lake

Start the day early, hiking from Charlotte Pass to establish the Base Camp just outside Blue Lake Catchment Area. This walk is roughly 4km with a 200m Elevation Gain and should take 2-3 hours.

Spend the afternoon warming up and learning skills at Blue Lake.

Enjoy dinner and reflect on the day’s progress surrounded by the stunning alpine scenery.

Day 4: Full Day at Blue Lake

Dedicate the entire day to climbing and abseiling at Blue Lake.

Practice multi-pitch climbing, trad techniques, belaying, and rappelling with expert guidance.

End the day with a well-earned meal and rest at base camp.

Day 5:  Morning Session and Farewell

Wrap up with a final morning session at Blue Lake to reinforce your skills and celebrate your achievements. 

An optional summit of Australia's 3rd highest peak, Mt Twynam, is also an option for those who want to mix it up.

Return to Charlotte Pass by 12 PM.

Depart for Canberra, feeling confident and ready for future climbing adventures.

FAQs

Who is this clinic for?

This clinic is designed for climbers with some outdoor climbing experience who are looking to progress into more adventurous terrain, such as alpine or trad climbing.

What ability level is required?

Participants should have a basic understanding of sport climbing techniques, belaying and some experience with outdoor climbing. A good fitness level is important for hiking, carrying gear, and spending full days on the rock.

What type of gear should I bring?

Participants are encouraged to bring their climbing gear if they have it, including:

  • 2-3 locking carabiners

  • 2x Prusiks

  • ATC Guide or GriGri

  • Helmet

  • Harness

  • Climbing shoes

  • Chalk bag

If you have trad climbing equipment, such as cams and nuts, please bring it along. We will provide any additional specific equipment required for the climbs.

How will the group be managed during workshops and climbs?

Our guides will divide participants into smaller sub-groups based on experience and ability levels. This ensures everyone receives tailored instruction, climbs routes suited to their skills, and progresses at their own pace. Whether you’re new to trad climbing or have more advanced experience, the clinic is designed to cater to various skill levels.

What grades are the climbs?

Climbs will range from grades 9 to 20, depending on your comfort and ability level. Routes will be tailored to match each participant’s skill level and goals.
